So, you’re planning a bachelor or bachelorette party that no one will forget… Well, remember this: If the party ends with a missing bride or groom, you probably won’t be the most popular person in the wedding party. Truth is, even a night filled with partying and celebration has rules. Heed them and everyone might actually remember all the fun they’re about to have.

#1: If you’re the best man or maid of honor, you’re the party planner.

First order of business: Find out what the bride or groom wants to do. Does she (or he) want to go to Las Vegas, or would they rather celebrate close to home?

Of course, not all bachelor/bachelorette parties involve tons of alcohol. Once the bride or groom decides on the night’s festivities, it’s your job to make them happen.

#2: Plan for more than a night club.

Cocktails and dancing have been a party staple since the first caveman and woman said “I do.” But if your guest of honor is not into, well, “tradition,” consider these party ideas:

#3: The bride or groom pays for nothing.

All costs should be split equally among those attending the party. So if you’re going away for the weekend, start saving your pennies. Best men and bride’s maids: It’s your responsibility to collect the money, so start early.

#4: The bride or groom also OKs the guest list.

Some want to invite family, friends, and colleagues, while others want only friends. Bottom line: It’s their call. If you have a problem with someone on the guest list, remember why you both are there and avoid conflict.

#5: Don’t act like you’re at a frat party.

A few drinks to celebrate the occasion is fine. After all, you want the bride or groom to actually remember their “last night of freedom.” Drink and be merry. But, if one of them ends up sunburned on a rooftop in Vegas, you’ve gone too far.

The bottom line: Give your friend the kind of party you’d want if it were your wedding. But don’t break the bank doing it. After all, you still have wedding gifts to buy.
